How I Tested Newborn Onesies

Unlike other newborn onesie reviews online, I actually purchased onesies from 24 different baby brands.

Was it expensive? Yeah. But worth it? I hope so!

Here’s a look at how I determined which bodysuits were the best.

Experiencing the purchasing process firsthand

Because I purchased all of these onesies, I got to experience the shopping, checkout, and delivery process myself.

Some brands arrived lightning-fast – Pehr was shipped out the same day and arrived within 3 days!

Others, such as Kyte, took a whopping 18 days to ship and another 4 days to arrive, making the total wait time over 3 weeks.

Analyzing the material and construction quality

Aside from testing these on a newborn, I closely analyzed the quality of each onesie.

There are several different ways to tell if a baby onesie is well-made or not. Here’s a peek at what I looked for.

The fabric

It’s pretty telling when you test for the “hand” of the fabric or how it feels when you touch it. Many onesies are very thin and a bit scratchy, while others have thicker material that’s buttery soft.

You wouldn’t know which onesie is the best unless you felt them and experienced them firsthand.

It’s also important to note that just because a onesie is 100% cotton doesn’t mean it’s good quality.

Many companies are making their fabric thinner to reduce costs, and it’s pretty easy to spot when you feel the fabric and also hold it up to the light.

Construction quality

Construction quality is another variable to look at when shopping for baby clothing.

Here are a few signs that a garment is well-made and will make for a good hand-me-down:

  • Pattern matching: if a onesie has a pattern, does it match up at the seams, sleeves, etc? This may not matter to you, but a quality garment will pay attention to these types of details.
  • Stitches per inch: the more stitches per inch a garment has, the longer it will last. You can test this by pulling a seam from the inside of the onesie – you’ll see a lot of daylight between stitches if it’s poorly made.
I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (7)
I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (8)
  • Stitching quality: low-quality clothes will have loopy stitches and uneven lines.
I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (9)
  • Seams: serged seams are the norm nowadays, but make sure the stitching is tight and the edge of the fabric is completely stitched. Flat-felled, french, or taped seams are a rarity but are a sign of high-quality construction.
I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (10)

Snaps and fasteners

Another big differentiator is the type of snaps used.

Some snaps are much easier to open and close, while others make you feel like you’re going to damage the fabric by how much force is required.

@twomamabears

Details matter… stay tuned for a massive deep dive of the 20+ most popular baby onesie brands. Not all are created equal, and winners will emerge. #babyclothes #showdown #newbornonesies #babyonesie

As an example, the Tabeeze snaps were effortless to open and close, whereas the Baby GAP snaps required a ton of force to open.

Little details like that can be the difference between reaching for one brand’s onesie over the other.

Putting the onesie on a baby

Last but not least, I put the onesies on a baby.

Since my youngest child is 16 months old, I brought in a friend who has a newborn.

We were able to try out the top-performing onesies on him to see just how easy or difficult they are to put on and take off.

His patience did wear off after onesie #16, but thankfully, I was able to test out the onesies at the top of my list.

We also got some of the cutest photos ever!

Now, let’s take a more in-depth look at each and every onesie brand.

We’ll start with the best onesies, followed by the middle-of-the-road options, and then the ones I’d skip.

The Best Baby Onesies

Best Overall (And Best Easy-Access): Tabeeze Bottom-Up Bodysuit

Note: If you opt for the Baby Starter Set and use my TWOMAMABEARS discount code, your price per onesie drops to just $13.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (13)

Pros:

  • 100% organic cotton
  • GTOS certified
  • Unique, easy-access features
  • Flat felled seams
  • No scratchy label
  • Super soft material
  • Thick fabric (durable)
  • Easiest snaps to open
  • Finger pocket behind snaps for easy alignment
  • Generous onesie donations to babies in need
  • 25% off with code TWOMAMABEARS making this a mid to low-priced option

Cons:

  • Only 4 color options
  • No distinctly feminine color choices

A huge thank you to Tabeeze for sponsoring this article and allowing me the freedom to speak about all of these baby brands openly and honestly.

There are a lot of great baby onesies on this list, but I’m in love with the easy-access design of Tabeeze bodysuits.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (14)

I literally looked at dozens of baby onesie brands online, and I did not see any design like that of Tabeeze.

The patented shoulder snaps and fumble-free snap alignment are a huge selling point.

If you want to maximize skin-to-skin bonding, you simply unsnap the shoulder, pull down the top of the onesie, and place baby on your chest.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (15)

It’s so easy and will probably encourage you to do skin-to-skin more than you would have otherwise. That takes a simple onesie to the next level.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (16)

On top of that, Tabeeze is 100% GOTS Certified Organic, ensuring no harmful chemicals in the fabric, and your onesie arrives pre-shrunk.

Tabeeze also has a Sharing is Caringinitiative, which is comprised of two components:

  • They provide free Tabeeze to families with disabled and medically complex babies.
  • For every item purchased, they donate an item to a participating NICU.

If all of that wasn’t enough, Tabeeze paid attention to the little things. The label is organically screen printed onto the fabric, and the inner seams are flat. Both of those things reduce skin irritation for your little one.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (17)

It’s easy to see why Tabeeze takes the cake for the best overall onesie, as it checks off so many boxes.

The only con for me is the limited number of colors to choose from. Some more feminine colors would be nice, such as pinks and purples.

Runner-Up: Hanna Andersson

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (18)

Pros:

  • 100% organic cotton
  • GOTS certified
  • Fantastic construction and quality
  • Mid-price
  • Buttery soft
  • Plenty of room in the diaper area thanks to the ruching and two snap options

Cons:

  • Not a tagless label
  • Only 5 color options

I was very impressed by the Hanna Andersson onesie. It checks all of the boxes, like being 100% organic cotton and GOTS certified on top of that.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (19)

When I looked closely at the stitching and seams, I saw that this is one of the highest-quality onesies out of the bunch. It’s definitely an article of clothing that can be passed on from generation to generation.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (20)

It’s at a middle-of-the-road price point, which is surprising given how buttery soft it is and the attention to detail. This is the only baby onesie with ruching in the diaper area to accommodate a full diaper.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (21)

There are also two snap options, which is another completely unique feature of Hanna Andersson.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (22)

Honestly, the only real con for me is that it doesn’t have a tagless label. The label can be scratchy, and cutting it off can leave you with a little strip of tag.

So, while it wasn’t as easy to get on and off as the Tabeeze, and it doesn’t have those amazing shoulder snaps to allow for skin-to-skin time, it’s still my runner-up for best baby onesie on the market.

Best on a Budget (and Best Pack of Onesies): H&M

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (23)

Pros:

  • Great price
  • Comes in packs
  • 100% organic cotton
  • GOTS certified
  • Soft fabric
  • Good snaps

Cons:

  • Average quality construction

H&M took the cake for me as the best inexpensive onesie option. The average price of a baby onesie is $17. H&M onesies are effectively $5 a piece, as you can buy a pack of 5 for about $25.

And for the quality, these are a steal.

They’re 100% organic cotton and are GOTS Certified, a rarity among onesies in this price range.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (24)

The construction quality is pretty average, with looser serging and no lay-flat inside seams, but that’s pretty much the norm amongst most mass-made onesies.

The fabric is very soft, though it does feel like it may stretch out over time. The snaps were easier to open and close compared to other inexpensive options, and I appreciate the tagless label.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (25)

Overall, the H&M onesie is a great deal!

Best Bamboo: Little Sleepies

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (26)

Pros:

  • Silky smooth material
  • Ultra stretchy, ensuring a longer lifespan
  • Tagless label
  • Unique bamboo material

Cons:

  • Not the best snaps
  • Could use more room in the diaper area

If you’ve ever experienced Little Sleepies fabric, it’s divine. It’s silky smooth, ultra stretchy, and almost cool to the touch.

That’s due to the unique blend of 95% viscose from bamboo and 5% spandex. This brand also does a tagless label on the inside, which I really appreciate.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (27)

The snaps on these weren’t my favorite, but the quality of the fabric makes up for it big time.

Because the fabric is so stretchy, a onesie made for 0-3 months could easily fit your child for two additional sizes up, which is a big money saver in the long run.

If you’re interested in trying out a bamboo onesie option, I’d go for Little Sleepies in a heartbeat, especially at the great price point.

Best Kimono: Pehr

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (28)

Pros:

  • Thick, luxurious fabric
  • Don’t need to pull over baby’s head
  • GOTS certified
  • 100% pima cotton

Cons:

  • Lots of snaps
  • Expensive

There’s no denying that the Pehr kimono-style onesie is absolutely beautiful. The fabric is very thick and sturdy, though not as soft as I expected for being pima cotton.

I found this one very easy to put on a baby as you can fully open it and lay baby on top. There’s no pulling it up and over a baby’s head, which is nice.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (29)
I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (30)

The drawback to that is there are so many darn snaps to do, which can take a little extra time.

The construction quality was pretty average, but the thickness of the fabric has this one stuck in my mind as a frontrunner. It’s definitely the best Kimono-style baby onesie on the market.

Best Made In USA Onesies: Tenth & Pine

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (31)

Pros:

  • Made in the USA
  • 100% organic cotton
  • Never bleached or dyed
  • Very soft
  • Cute sayings to choose from
  • The best packaging, great for gifting

Cons:

  • On the expensive side
  • Average construction

Finding baby onesies that are made in the USA is harder than I originally thought. In fact, I had purchased all of the onesies I planned on testing to realize that none of them were made in the USA.

So, I went on the hunt and found Tenth & Pine. For being organic cotton and made in the USA, I’m pretty impressed at the $26 price point, though that is still pretty expensive.

The fabric is very soft, and it’s never bleached or dyed. I also love the adorable sayings you can choose from – “Hello I’m New Here” was too cute to pass up.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (32)

The packaging is also absolutely amazing! It was hands-down the best packaging out of any onesie I ordered. This would be perfect for gifting.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (33)

If you’re set on buying something made in America, I’d recommend Tenth & Pine. It’s not the best onesie on the list, but it’s the best one made in the states.

Best Onesies That Cover Hands: Gerber

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (34)

Pros:

  • Option to cover hands
  • Inexpensive
  • Comes in packs

Cons:

  • Runs small
  • Average construction
  • Not organic

Gerber onesies are very popular due to the low price point and wide availability. You can also buy them in large packs, making it a cost-effective way to bulk up your baby wardrobe.

Gerber onesies are not my favorite as they’re exceptionally small, which may not sound like a con. But in my experience, if you purchase the size you think you need, and it arrives already too small, you won’t get a long life out of it.

Plus, the construction is average at best, and the cotton is not organic. That said, these onesies have the unique feature of being able to cover your baby’s hands.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (35)
I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (36)

If your little one is a face scratcher, it’s really convenient to have mittens built into your onesies. For that reason, Gerber is the best onesie that covers hands.

Best Onesie for Formal Occasions: Kissy Kissy

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (37)

Pros:

  • Collared design good for formal occasions
  • 100% pima cotton
  • Soft fabric

Cons:

  • Difficult snaps
  • Scratchy tag
  • Expensive

If you have a formal event to attend, but you still want your baby to be extra cozy and comfy, I’d recommend the brand Kissy Kissy.

The onesie is soft and made of 100% pima cotton. Pima cotton is very absorbent, resistant to pilling, and it’s known for being extra durable.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (38)

The stylized collar gives this bodysuit that extra oomph for a formal event. The snaps are a bit difficult and the tag is scratchy, but it’s the best onesie with a hint of formality to it.

You’ll be glad you chose a onesie when you see how comfortable your baby is and how easy diaper changes are. Forget the baby tuxes or button-ups.

Other Notable Onesies

Not all onesies can be the best, but many of the options I tried were still good options.

Here’s a look at the onesies that I still think are worth looking at, though I wouldn’t fill up my baby’s wardrobe with them.

Rockets of Awesome

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (39)

Pros:

  • Innovative “2fer” design
  • Looks great with jeans
  • Good snaps
  • Cute patterns

Cons:

  • Not organic
  • Average construction quality
  • Expensive

Rockets of Awesome has one of the more innovative onesie designs I’ve seen. It’s called a “2fer,” and it’s essentially a baby onesie that looks like a t-shirt.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (40)

The construction is average, and the fabric is pretty much right down the middle of the road. It’s not super soft, but it’s not horribly scratchy, either.

I don’t love that the fabric isn’t organic cotton because there are less expensive onesies on this list that are.

But the design is unique, and while I wouldn’t fill up my baby’s closet with this brand, it might be a nice option to have on hand.

I also have to point out the super cute label!

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (41)

Baby Mori

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (42)

Pros:

  • Bamboo blend
  • Very soft and stretchy
  • Ribbed texture

Cons:

  • More expensive than comparable options

I really wanted to put Baby Mori on the list of the best onesies, but for me, it got beat out by Little Sleepies.

Both of these brands use viscose from bamboo, though Little Sleepies has a much higher percentage, which makes it softer to the touch.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (43)
I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (44)

Baby Mori is also $5 more per onesie than Little Sleepies. While I think it’s a great option, I would rather spend my money on the less expensive, softer onesie from Little Sleepies.

Kyte

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (45)

Pros:

  • Super soft and stretchy
  • Bamboo blend

Cons:

  • Took over 3 weeks to arrive
  • More expensive than comparable options

I went into this thinking that Kyte could be at the top of the list, but I cannot get over how long it took this company to ship the product.

It was the last onesie to arrive – it took over 3 weeks to get here from my order date.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (46)
I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (47)

It’s super soft and stretchy – it has almost identical fabric to Little Sleepies. But it’s $2 more per onesie, and you’re going to wait for weeks to get your hands on it.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (48)

So, for me, while I think the onesie is really high quality and the bamboo fabric blend is very nice, I’d choose Little Sleepies over it every time.

MONICA + ANDY

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (49)

Pros:

  • Soft fabric
  • 100% organic cotton
  • GOTS certified

Cons:

  • There are comparable options from other brands for less $

MONICA + ANDY is a solid onesie brand.

The fabric is pretty soft, and the construction isn’t bad.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (50)

There’s really not much to say about this brand other than you can get onesies with a very similar look and feel for less.

Is it a bad onesie? No. Would I choose it over others on this list? Also no.

Primary

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (51)

Pros:

  • 100% organic cotton
  • Good construction quality
  • Thicker fabric than most
  • Affordable prices
  • Lots of color options

Cons:

  • Not a lot of give in the fabric
  • Not GTOS certified

Our family has been big fans of the brand Primary for years. Their sweet spot is creating wardrobe staples. Most of their clothes can mix and match, making it so much easier to dress your child in the morning.

My biggest issue with Primary clothes in the past is the fabric is not very stretchy, so the wear time window is pretty short.

The same goes for the baby onesies. These are not forgiving onesies that’ll let you get a few extra months out of them.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (52)

That said, they’re made of organic cotton, and the construction on them was a step up from the other onesie brands on this list.

They’re also at a pretty affordable price point of $10 for a short-sleeved bodysuit and $14 for a long-sleeved one.

But still, H&M has a comparable organic cotton onesie that’s also GTOS certified for half the price.

GAP

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (53)

Pros:

  • Decently soft
  • 100% organic cotton

Cons:

  • Hardest snaps to open

The GAP onesie was another very average option. It was slightly softer than Carter’s, but the snaps were the hardest to open and close out of the bunch.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (54)

While it’s not a bad onesie, the snap situation would have me frustrated and reaching for a different brand. Plus, H&M is at a cheaper price point and is of higher quality.

Rabbit Skins

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (55)

Pros:

  • Bright color options
  • Very soft fabric
  • Good construction

Cons:

  • Not organic
  • Snaps are hard to open

I’ve always known of Rabbit Skins as the brand that people purchase to do iron-ons and custom designs.

First of all, I love the bright color options, and the fabric is very soft, though it’s not organic. The construction was definitely on the better side as the onesies featured lay-flat seams, which is a rarity.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (56)

The snaps on these were difficult to open, but in general, these are solid onesies.

The only reason I would not buy these is H&M is the same price and features organic cotton. But in general, these two brands are very comparable, and you can’t go wrong with either.

Honest

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (57)

Pros:

  • Great price
  • 100% organic cotton
  • GTOS certified
  • Very soft

Cons:

  • Average construction quality
  • Difficult snaps

I had high hopes for Honest as it has quite the reputation in the baby world for being clean and organic for an affordable price.

And these onesies are organic at a very competitive price, but they fell a bit short compared to other options. The construction is average at best, but in reality, it was one of the worst of the bunch.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (58)

The 100% organic cotton fabric was very soft, but like some other brands on the list, the snaps were unusually hard to open and required quite a bit of force.

In general, I think Honest is a good baby onesie brand, but it’s not any better than the other options on this list.

Carters

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (59)

Pros:

  • Cheapest onesie brand
  • Come in large packs

Cons:

  • Not organic
  • Very thin fabric
  • Average construction

Carters was the cheapest option on the list, and it’s probably also one of the most widely-known baby clothing brands on the market.

I hoped it would be amazing so that I could recommend it as the best onesie pack on a budget, but it fell short in more ways than one.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (60)

First of all, the onesies are not organic cotton, but on top of that, the fabric is very thin.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (61)

These aren’t super soft, but they’re also not horribly scratchy. The construction is pretty average as well.

My biggest concerns with these are longevity and not knowing what kinds of chemicals might be in the fabric. I’d much rather choose an organic cotton brand, particularly one that’s GOTS Certified to make sure the fabric that touches my baby’s skin is clean.

That said, you can bulk up your baby’s wardrobe pretty fast with these, as they come in large packs for a dirt cheap price.

Baby Onesies I’d Skip

Finally, here’s a look at the baby onesie brands I’d steer clear from. These onesies had issues that I could not overlook, and I wouldn’t buy them nor recommend them to a friend.

Winter Water Factory

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (62)

Pros:

  • Made in the USA
  • Beautiful, vibrant patterns
  • 100% organic cotton

Cons:

  • Painfully overpriced
  • Average construction

Winter Water Factory is one of the only baby onesies on this list that’s made in the USA. There’s nothing inherently wrong with the onesie – the pattern is beautiful, and it’s made of 100% organic cotton.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (63)

It’s pretty wide, so it’s a good choice for chunkier babies.

The problem is it’s so overpriced that it hurts my stomach a little bit.

I was expecting this onesie to blow me away at a $44 price point, but it didn’t. It doesn’t even have any luxurious details, such as flat felled seams. And onesies that are half the price have those details!

It did come wrapped in gift wrap, but even Tenth & Pine did better than that and at a lower price point.

While the onesie is nice, this brand has no business charging close to $50 for it.

Sweet Wink

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (66)

Pros:

  • Cute sayings

Cons:

  • The worst construction quality
  • Thin fabric
  • Expensive

Sweet Wink’s onesie was the lowest quality option on this list, and it’s also one of the priciest options on the list. Make it make sense!

The stitching is loose and uneven, and the edges around the neck are very sloppy.

The fabric is thin with no resilience, so it’ll stretch out over time.

This one is a big no from me.

SOBOWO

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (69)

Pros:

  • Comes with a bow tie
  • Formal design

Cons:

  • Thin, scratchy fabric
  • Bad stitching and seams
  • Not organic and from an unfamiliar brand on Amazon

This baby onesie is from Amazon, and it was my attempt at finding a formal onesie that’s good for special events or occasions. It’s a button-up and comes with a bow tie, but there’s nothing redeeming about this onesie.

The fabric is trash, the stitching is horrible, and the bow tie was even ripped upon arrival.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (70)

Unfortunately, I’ve found this to be the case with brands like this on Amazon – they’re not “brand names,” so the onesie could be coming from anywhere.

It probably won’t even be on Amazon anymore after some time. I’d stick to onesie brands with a reputation.

Leveret Baby

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (71)

Pros:

  • Unique turtleneck design

Cons:

  • Poor stitching
  • Baby seemed annoyed with fabric around neck

I was really excited about the Leveret Baby onesie since it’s the only turtleneck I could find. If you like that style, I was hoping to recommend this one.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (72)

The problem is the stitching is really bad – this onesie is going to fall apart after being worn and washed several times.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (73)

I also found that the turtleneck around the baby’s neck seemed uncomfortable for him. This style may not be the best choice for a newborn after all.

Colored Organics

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (74)

Pros:

  • 100% organic cotton

Cons:

  • Average quality, but higher price than better alternatives

Colored Organics was very forgettable – it’s average in almost every way.

The construction is very standard, and the quality is pretty much the same as other big brands on this list. The only difference is it costs more.

You could get the equivalent of three H&M onesies for the price of one of these, and H&M is so much better.

Burt’s Bees

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (75)

Pros:

  • Unique v-neck
  • 100% organic

Cons:

  • Very thin fabric
  • Horrible seams and stitching

We are big fans of Burt’s Bees footie pajamas – they run a bit slim, but they’re cozy and at a great price point. I had high hopes for the baby onesie, but the construction on this is mind-boggling.

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (76)

The stitching is fine in some places and then the worst of the bunch in others. I wrote on my notes: “WTF about the sleeves?!”

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (77)

It’s very bizarre. The fabric is also crazy thin. While it’s 100% organic cotton, it doesn’t feel like it. Save your money on this one!

Amazon Essentials

I Tested the 24 Best Baby Onesie Brands – There’s a Winner (78)

Pros:

  • Cheap
  • Fast shipping

Cons:

  • Thin fabric
  • Bad construction
  • Bizarre designs
  • Not organic

The onesies from Amazon Essentials were definitely some of the worst on the list. The fabric is very thin, and the construction is just plain bad. It looks very rushed.

At the time that I ordered, Amazon Essentials didn’t have any plain onesies in stock for 0-3 months – they only had this bizarre, kitschy design with the days of the week on the front. It makes no sense to me… pass!

FAQs

What is a baby onesie?

A baby onesie is an article of clothing that looks like a shirt but snaps underneath baby’s diaper, making the garment one piece. Baby onesies are also sometimes called bodysuits. If the garment extends down into shorts, it’s called a romper.

How do you put a onesie on a baby?

How you put a onesie on a baby will depend on which onesie brand you buy. My top recommendation is from Tabeeze, which allows you to unsnap the shoulders, creating a wide opening to slip over baby’s head.

How do you take off a baby onesie?

The best way to take off a baby onesie, especially for newborns, is to pull it down. All baby onesies have extra room in the neck area, allowing you to slide it down their arms instead of up and over their head. This is much more comfortable for baby, and it can help you avoid cries of frustration.

How do you fold a baby onesie?

I’m a big fan of the Marie Kondo folding method, so I fold baby onesies in thirds. This allows me to stack them upright in a drawer to quickly see all of the options.

This video shows you how to do that (starting at 1:59):

How much is a baby onesie?

The average price of a baby onesie is $17. If you can purchase a pack of onesies, your price per onesie will be significantly less – often less than $5 per onesie. However, there are onesies that are close to $50.

How much does a baby onesie weigh?

Baby onesies can weigh between 43 to 71 grams, based on my measuring two dozen different onesie brands. The average weight of a baby onesie is 50 grams.

How do I tell if a baby onesie is too small?

The best way to tell if a baby onesie is too small is if it’s difficult to put on your baby. If you’re struggling to get it over your baby’s head or you have to tug on the onesie to get it to snap, it’s time to go up a size.

Conclusion

Finding the best baby onesie took several weeks of testing, analyzing, and photography, but I’m so glad I did this!

I’d never given it much thought before, but when you really look closely at the different baby onesie brands, it becomes apparent which ones are the highest quality, and it’s not necessarily correlated with price.

If you want the very best onesies on the market, Tabeeze is hands-down the winner, and you can get 25% off with code TWOMAMABEARS.

Tabeeze is definitely the onesie brand I’d choose if I were shopping for a baby shower gift, and I’d definitely want to buy a few for my newborn.

Let me know in the comments your thoughts on these baby onesies!
