Air Fryer Fajita Chicken (Hasselback Style)

We love that this recipe is so straightforward with super easy ingredients. For step-by-step instructions, check out the printable recipe card below. But here is what you’ll need to get started.

  • CHICKEN BREASTS – 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts. Try to make sure they are all the same size so they will cook evenly.
  • OLIVE OIL – You can substitute for any other oil as long as it has a pretty high smoke point. Avocado Oil, Coconut Oil, Soybean Oil and Peanut Oil could all work.
  • FAJITA SEASONING – We just used store bought fajita seasoning. But you can certainly make your own homemade fajita seasoning mix if you’d like or if you have dietary considerations. Or, in a pinch, you can just use some taco seasoning if you have it laying around the house, this recipe will still taste delicious!
  • BELL PEPPERS – We used yellow and orange bell peppers. But you can use green and/or red bell peppers if you’d like.
  • ONION – One sliced red onion. You can substitute a yellow onion.
  • CHEESE – Shredded cheese. We used a colby jack and cheddar mix. But you can use whatever you’d like. Try pepper jack to give it a little more of a kick.
  • SALT AND PEPPER – To taste.

How To Tell If Your Air Fryer Chicken Is Done?

It really is pretty hard to over cook chicken in an Air Fryer. But it is certainly possible. A lot of times, when cooking smaller pieces of chicken in an Air Fryer, I can just take on piece out and cut into it to see if it’s done. It would be a little harder to do that with with recipe. It’s good to have a good meat thermometer on hand. Simply stick it in and make sure the internal temperature reads above 165 degrees.

Toppings For Air Fryer Chicken Fajitas

We topped ours with some fresh cilantro, but you can certainly upgrade your toppings if you’d like! Some ideas would be Pico de Gallo, Salsa, Guacamole, Sliced Avocados, Fresh Lime Wedges or Fresh Lime Juice, Sour Cream or Greek Yogurt.

How To Store Leftovers

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in your refrigerator. They should be good for up to 4-5 days. This dish reheats just fine in the microwave.

I would not recommend freezing this recipe.

Notes and Tips

  • DON’T OVERCROWD – Make sure there is room enough in your Air Fryer Basket for the air to move around. Otherwise the chicken just won’t cook right.
  • USE A PARCHMENT PAPER –Some people like to use Air Fryer Parchment Paper on recipes like this. It’s not necessary (we didn’t) but it can make cleaning up a little easier.
  • EVERY AIR FRYER IS DIFFERENT – The cooking time we suggest is good for OUR Air Fryer. There are so many models out there these days that it’s impossible to assume they will all cook the same. Keep an eye on you chicken and use your thermometer to see if it’s done.

We hope you enjoy this recipe for Air Fryer Chicken Fajitas. Please let us know how it turns out in the comments section!

So…the picture looks like 1 breast at a time. Is that the case? So you do this 4 times?

It depends on how big your air fryer is. Mine is pretty small so I had to to one at a time. If you have a trivet you could do one on top of each other.

Overcooked chicken is tough, dry, and just not good. Chicken should be done actively cooking at around 160ºF, then it should be rested for about five minutes, which is when the chicken will inactively cook, or "carry-over cook", bringing the internal temperature up to 165ºF.

Should I coat chicken in oil before air frying? ›

While I do recommend very lightly spraying the fried chicken with oil before and during air frying, you don't submerge the pieces entirely in oil, and as a result, they undoubtedly absorb less oil in the process.

Why isn't my chicken getting crispy in the air fryer? ›

Dry the outside of the food properly before you add oil. Do not use too much oil, as this will make the food less crispy and more fattening. Meat or poultry can be lightly brushed with oil or marinated to get the crispiest results.

What is the secret to moist chicken? ›

There are three key tricks: tenderize, marinate, and controlled cooking time. When you use all three of these methods, you will have succulent, moist chicken every time, and you can apply these strategies to other cuts of meat as well.

How to make chicken very soft and tender? ›

The best tenderizer though, is a salted yogurt marinade. The salt has the same effect as in a regular brine, but the lactic acid in the yogurt further tenderizes the meat. A 15-minute marinade with one cup of yogurt and one teaspoon of salt makes for the most tender chicken breasts imaginable.

How do you cook boneless skinless chicken breasts so they don't dry out? ›

Her suggestion: Place boneless, skinless chicken breasts in a pan in a single layer, cover with a few inches of liquid (water, broth, etc.), add flavorings (spices, salt, herbs, soy sauce, etc.), then bring the liquid just barely to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce the heat so the liquid simmers.

Is air frying chicken breast bad? ›

Do you need to flip chicken in an air fryer? ›

Should I cut chicken before or after cooking for fajitas? ›

Chicken: For the juiciest chicken fajitas, use boneless, skinless chicken thighs. After they're finished cooking, I let the meat rest for 5 minutes, then I slice them up.

What onion is best for fajitas? ›

There's no one-size-fits-all answer to choosing the right onion for your fajitas. You can go for the traditional white or yellow onions, offering a more savory option, or experiment with sweet onions like Vidalia or Walla Walla to add a subtle sweetness to your dish.

Can I substitute taco seasoning for fajita seasoning? ›

Fajita seasoning and taco seasoning are very similar, but they are not the same. Taco seasoning typically has more oregano and chili powder than fajita seasoning. With that being said, however, you can use fajita seasoning and taco seasoning interchangeably in recipes, it may just warrant a slightly different flavor.

How to air fry chicken without it getting dry? ›

Spray the bottom of your air fryer with an oil spray (no aerosol), or use a pastry brush with olive oil. Cook the chicken at 375ºF for 9 min on each side (see note). Let sit for 5 minutes.

How to keep meat moist in an air fryer? ›

Using oil

Using oil in an air fryer is perfectly fine and helps the meat to remain moist and come out looking golden brown. However, a little oil in an air fryer does go a long way. With most cuts of pork, simply rubbing some oil into the meat will be all you need. You can use either regular olive oil or a spray oil.

Can you put water in an air fryer to keep chicken moist? ›

The short answer is no, you should not put water in an air fryer to steam or to boil. An air fryer essentially works by circulating hot air using a heating coil and an inbuilt fan.

Should I put foil in my air fryer for chicken? ›

The great news about air fryers is that you can use foil along with parchment paper to cook your food in an air fryer. Just remember that if it's safe and effective to use in a conventional oven, it will work just fine in an air fryer.
